According to Fortune, Amazon is about to add switchboard operator to Alexa’s list of occupations. From “You Could Soon Make Phone Calls on Amazon’s New Alexa Device,” we learn the company will offer hardware that can connect phone calls and act as an intercom between Alexa devices. The tool was in beta testing as recently as February. Writer Aric Jenkins cites a Recode article as he observes,
The development of the phone and intercom technology could signal Amazon’s desire to embed Alexa into more daily activities at home outside of common uses like music streaming and weather updates.
Whether the device will sync with smartphones or require separate phone numbers is uncertain. What is clear is the advantages of voice-activated communications. Will the competition follow?
